2012 AAUW Howard County Scholarship Winners

Each year AAUW Howard County Branch awards scholarships to Howard Community College women who are going on to a four year college or university. We are proud to present the recipients of the 2012 scholarships.

Ayana Chappell is a single mother of two biological sons and two foster sons. She was a full time nursing student who attended Howard County Community College’s RN day program and had a 3.15 GPA.

She was an active participant in the campus Student Nursing Association as well as the National Student Nursing Association and in the Career Links program.

Ayana wrote of her plans for the future, “Juggling full time work, a full time school schedule and a family has not been easy; but with the love, assistance, and support from my family, I am able to set and accomplish my goals. I will graduate in spring 2012 with my RN degree and transfer to a 4year institution, University of Maryland School of Nursing to complete my BSN and then continue to work towards my Master’s degree with the ultimate goal of becoming a Nurse Practitioner.”

Michelle Patterson is a single mom and working professional. She had a GPA of 3.0 at Howard Community College and in the fall of 2012 planned to transfer to Stevenson University where she was accepted into their Criminal Justice Program focusing in the Criminal Justice: Computer Forensic Field.

In Michelle’s words, “I’m a single Mom of two children, who cares for and provides for my two elderly parents who reside with my children and me. I work full time, attend school, and I’m a full-time committed mother and daughter. My goal is to not only be the first generation in my family to excel and complete college but to set a path of excellence for my children. I will continue to look forward with my future for my sake and set the path for my children that anything is possible.”

Jennie Wang is a first generation immigrant from China, and currently the first and only one in her family to pursue college. “College was never on my mind during my high school career until I had my daughter in 2008. Having a baby at a young age gave me courage and determination to show my daughter that anything is achievable as long as you have a clear mind set.”

Jennie was a full time student and served as Vice President of Student Government Association and Phi Theta Kappa and was Chair of Student Senate at Howard Community College. After graduation from Howard Community College in May 2012, Jennie plans to attend Johns Hopkins University- Carey Business School and study international business.
